I was chatting to a mum last week about her experiences with breastfeeding her first child. Her child, now 3 years old had great difficulty latching during feeding. Despite all her best efforts this mum only managed to get breastmilk to her child from exclusively pumping. So that’s what she did. She exclusively pumped for 6 months. Even if her child slept through, she had to get up every 3 hours to pump. Now that is dedication! She was seeing lactation consultants to help her and by 6 months she was at her wits end. She told me that she persevered because no-one gave her permission to give her child formula. She needed permission!
This is just crazy! No mum should have to ask permission to raise her child the way she wants to. I’ve been thinking about this mum a lot over the week and I decided to write this post for any of you mums who need permission.
I give you permission to want to be the type of mum you WANT to be – not what you husband / partner or family want you to be.
I give you permission to be a gentle parent when everyone around you is pressuring you to sleep train, use time-out or spank your child.
I give you permission to hold and cuddle your baby.
I give you permission to lie down with your children until they fall asleep.
I give you permission to take time out to look after yourself.
I give you permission to flick on Facebook while your child is playing.
I give you permission to cry when you’re feeling overwhelmed and as if you’re unable to cope.
I give you permission to not give your child 100% organic, GMO free, home made food.
I give you permission to have a picnic in the lounge room on paper plates because you can’t be bothered doing the washing up.
I give you permission to leave the laundry unfolded.
I give you permission to stay home all day because it’s too complicated to get everyone out of the house.
I give you permission to sit down and watch TV rather than wash the dishes.
I give you permission to want to, and enjoy being a stay at home mum.
I give you permission to want to go back to work, and enjoy it.
I give you permission to not want to keep up with the Joneses.
I give you permission to seek out help, professionals and programs to help you.
I give you permission to be YOU!
I speak to too many mums feel like they ‘should’ be doing this or ‘must’ be doing that. They feel pressured to live up to unrealistic expectations for themselves and their kids. It’s crazy, but all too common.
Take to heart what I’ve said. I give you permission!
If you’re struggling with where you are, then please get in contact. Connect with me on Facebook, or send me an email or even a text or phone call on 0432 936 867. Let me give you permission and help you be the type of mum YOU want to be, without feeling any guilt!
