I’ve been thinking a lot lately about change. There’s a lot going on in the next few months for me including moving house (not a small feat at all). Change is inevitable, it is the only constant in life. Without it life could not exist. Day changes into night. Summer into Autumn. Children grow up. Flowers bloom.
But what about when it comes to you? Can you change? Are you willing to change?
In relationships we are told that you can never change someone. They are true words. You cannot be responsible for the actions of another person. You are not responsible for who they are. It is different for yourself.
You and only you are responsible for your actions. You and only you are responsible for the type of person, the type of mum you are. There is NO room for blame. There is NO room for excuses. I don’t say this to make you feel negative about yourself, or guilty. But only to highlight one of the greatest gifts we are given… the freedom of CHOICE!
You can choose what you eat, where you live, who you spend time with. You can choose what to wear, where you sleep, what to do with your days. You can choose how you act! You can choose the type of person you want to be. You can choose the type of mum you want to be!
If you want to change something – then change it!
If you want to be a particular type of person – then be that type of person!
If you want to be a better mum – then be a better mum!
It really is that easy. It is just about making a decision. Learning how to act in a way that is congruent to the type of person you want to be, can be a little bit more difficult.
The best way you can do this and put yourself in a place of success, is with a guide. Find a mentor, find a coach, find a trainer. Get someone else who knows all the techniques to teach you so you can reach your goal.
I had my first personal training session this morning since my first pregnancy. About 4.5 years. I’ve been to the gym in between and exercised but not with guidance. My trainer asked me why now. My two motivators are a) build my core strength up so my sciatica improves and b) loose the last 7kg of weight hanging around. I have reached the point where I am sick of being in pain more often than not, and I don’t want to have negative feelings of my body. The pain – both physically and psychologically has gotten too much. So I have invested in my body, in my life and in my health for the next 12 weeks.
Yes part of me doesn’t want to. I know it will hurt. I don’t want to stop eating all the foods I love. I know at times I will loose motivation. But this does not stop me. I will not let any fear of change stop me from being healthy and pain free.
So what about you? What do you want to change in your life?
I speak to lots of mums who want to be a better mum for their kids. They want to be a calm, fun mum. They want to stop yelling, stop putting the kids in front of the TV, start feeding them healthier foods, stop feeling guilty for spending anytime on themselves. Yet they are reluctant to change.
My answer to every mum is the same…. “What’s stopping you?”
Chances are you’re the only one who is getting in the way of being the type of mum, the type of person you want to be. We are responsible for our actions, so ultimately we are responsible for standing in the way of us changing.
Can change be scary? Yes. Is it overwhelming? Sometimes. Should we avoid it? NO!
When will you be ready?
Will you be ready the next time you yell and make your child cry? Will you be ready the next time you threaten to or smack your child? Will you be ready the next time you sit on the couch in the evening feeling exhausted, sleep deprived, touched out and resentful that you haven’t spent any time on yourself?
What is your pain? When will the pain of not being the type of mum you want to be be too much?
Only you can answer these questions. Only you will know when you’re a 10 out of 10 on the readiness to change scale. And you know what, the day you decide you are ready is the first day of the rest of your life.
